Of course, I forgot my camera at the dance partiest show ever. Just as well, I cannot be tied down when the beat moves me. The crowd was at perfect concentration last night at Urban Lounge for Walter Meego/The Presets, enough room to dance but tons of energy. Here are someone else's shots of the show from flickr. We've been waiting to see Walter Meego since back in More Than Milk's infancy when they started mailing us all sorts of goodies. Their first full-length album Voyager came out today, which I recommend buying for 7.99 with bonus tracks at iTunes. It's has just enough synth noise to make you delightfully uncomfortable and enough pop to stick with you, like in "Girls" when he sings bouncily, "everything I do, I do it for a girl, i do it for a girl..." Every once in a while, it's worth being said that I love this man.

I used to know someone who used to work for Paul Simon's manager/brother who told me that one day his daughter revealed to her that "Uncle Artie wears a wig." So that answers it, Garfunkel's hair is no longer real.

good morning, free and legal

A few treats were in my inbox this morning. First, a couple remixes from favorite Australian label Modular. This comes via an Urbn blog feature on Modular which is a good way to get familiar with their artists if you aren't yet or get more excited for Muscles' first full length coming in October. Read bios and see videos all in one cute little flash interface. Plus, they've got a couple remixes of Ice Cream (both the NYPC and Muscles variety) for dl. Don't be misled when they call it a sampler, it's just these two.

Second, a new free and legal single from Club 8! It's so good to hear something new from these guys. Plus the cover art feeds my 70s summer park music fetish, which I may have mentioned before and will surely mention again. This comes via Swedish label Labrador.

"Heaven" introduces a hint of Brasilian carnivals with a mix of euphoria and melancholica, percussion grooves and a lyrical death theme. And of course, melodies to die for. Heavenly indeed!

The OC redux

In other summer television watching, I've restarted The OC from season 1. It only took a few months since the series finale for me to get nostalgic for it. It doesn't feel that long ago, but back then Seth was making jokes about Friendster as Myspace wasn't even a thing yet. And I was making excuses that I had to watch because it was about my hometown, but that didn't last long. No apologies here. (Except for the stream of Orange County-sullying reality shows that followed.) The show deserves some credit for legitimizing made-up words in popular lexicon, for making nerds hot(ter), and for giving a spotlight to deserving bands--even to the point of overexposing Imogen Heap and Death Cab--while evolving the relationship between mainstream and independent media. I mean, who'd have ever thought you'd hear Fredo Viola soundtrack an earthquake in Newport Beach? By the way, I first heard this song on a mix from miss LL and subsequently discovered some alternate mixes:

remix tuesday: more swedes

Lo-Fi-Fnk's Boylife, out next Monday in Scandinavia, will be one of my most anticipated releases this year. I really don't understand why they don't get more attention in the interworld (but at least Pitchfork isn't shoving it down your throat). They just haven't had enough of an American presence yet, but maybe finally having a full length will help. I'm crossing my fingers that when they announce their tour they'll have some American dates. Just because they're all synthy and Swedish, don't think they'll be at all like The Knife. These boys would be soundtracking children's birthday parties in the park, not stories about disease and deformity. "Wake Up" is the first single, this remix in particular makes them sound more 80's than usual. It would be lovely as the credits roll in of one of those dance-battle movies, right after the big victory, but maybe one where our heroes have to out-dance dirty robots instead of gangstas. Nice how I want every song in a movie these days. And there's the original so you get the pure LFF flavor.

Le Tigre Remixed

I thought maybe Remix Tuesdays would keep me from posting too many remixes. But then I realized that's wack and there's no such thing. Lo-Fi-Fnk just posted this remix and I had to share it even though I know I talk about them a lot. I realized that the thing about Lo-Fi-Fnk is that they have such a childlike sound. Now, I mean that in the best way possible; it's so innocent and joyous. Ew, that was juicy.
