run, rabbit, run

Alan Mcgee thinks Glasvegas is the best band to come out of Glasgow in 20 years, since The Jesus and Mary Chain. He describes them as a cross between The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Ronnettes, Little Richard, Alex Chilton, and Motown. Plus, they have a chick drummer.

When my Scottish informant sent me an album of Glasvegas singles last week I was beside myself. The few lone demos drifting around the netternet last year, like "Flowers and Football Tops," left me obsessed and biting my nails for more. This singles collection adds a few more to the fire, like "It's My Own Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry." There'll be a proper album from them later this year on Columbia, co-produced by Rich Costey who's worked with Interpol, Franz Ferdinand, and Muse. The first Columbia single is Geraldine, watch the new video for it here. There's nothing wrong with their own recordings, but in this video we hear their sound in a for reals studio with proper acoustics and oh, it is legendary, in the words of Barney. Listen to it with good headphones.

armada

Of course, I forgot my camera at the dance partiest show ever. Just as well, I cannot be tied down when the beat moves me. The crowd was at perfect concentration last night at Urban Lounge for Walter Meego/The Presets, enough room to dance but tons of energy. Here are someone else's shots of the show from flickr. We've been waiting to see Walter Meego since back in More Than Milk's infancy when they started mailing us all sorts of goodies. Their first full-length album Voyager came out today, which I recommend buying for 7.99 with bonus tracks at iTunes. It's has just enough synth noise to make you delightfully uncomfortable and enough pop to stick with you, like in "Girls" when he sings bouncily, "everything I do, I do it for a girl, i do it for a girl..." Listen to several tracks from the new album here. Here's from the Romantic ep:

freakin hummingbird

This is the hummingbird that followed me inside the house Saturday. He tried to leave via the skylight. I tried to help him out, but finally gave up. I left the back door open for a while and when I didn't hear any more humming I thought he had found his way out. Until yesterday when Kayla found him in front of the tv, claws dug into the carpet. I guess he tried to get out thru the television. Hummingbirds are definitely not as smart as crows. Jory took Dead Hummingbird and soon will have a hummingbird skull necklace.

sucked in

Do you remember this video? I think it was my junior year of high school and I was OBSESSED. I recorded it off the tv and watched it over and over and I'm pretty sure I still have that VHS tape in a box.

NYC Part VI: it's over!

Stretching out my NY post sure has made blogging easy. In honor of completeness, here's what I've neglected to mention about the trip.

Ate nummy food:
one last brekkie at Florent before it closes for good next month (sob!)
my first Shake Shack: maybe the best hamburger ever
Thai at Sea in Billyburg where the opening scene of Garden State was filmed

Sightings: (other than Christian)
Nole Marin (America's Next Top Model)
Ally and Tommy Hilfiger (couldn't care less about Tommy. But man I miss Ally and her rabbit teeth on Rich Girls. Remember the episode where she taught us how to tap the third eye?)

Coolest new museum with the worst art:
New Museum
Best thing there was the lime green corrugated elevator interiors.

Best roommates for the week, or, Mormons gentrifying Harlem:
Ashley, Becca, & obvs Amy

Here's a funny thing about Mormons in Harlem. During my visit we found out that a friend's husband had been writing a piece for BYU Magazine about the apartment I used to live in on 111th street. In talking to people he had figured out that Amy Middleton, Carlynne Cutler, and Jo Thomas had lived together. I'm not sure what the story was all about, something about how several other LDS kids lived in the building too and someone at one point started calling it Harleman Halls, a pun that would only make sense to those familiar with BYU student housing. One day in talking to the magazine people, he asked if the co-ed living in the story was ok, which it wasn't, so they put the kibosh on the article. Dear world, it's JO Thomas not JOE Thomas. Yeah, because of me a BYU mag article got tossed by the wayside. Or really because of assuming. Now that the misunderstanding is straightened out, we may eventually get to read what on earth all this was about in the first place.

So, yeah. Till next time, NY. And I swear I'll get some music up soon.

NYC Part V: Seen at the Met

A daily visit for a few months of my life, The Metropolitan Museum of Art is now a must on every trip.

My favorite sculpture at the Met
ugolino
Ugolino and his Sons
Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux
As told in Dante's The Inferno, Ugolino was a traitor condemned to starvation. Here he is resisting his son's offers of their own bodies for sustenance. I can't help but focus on his tensed and contorted toes.

On The Roof

Walking up a staircase, spotted something I'd never seen before that was pretty compelling. Is it sick that I think it looks like they've been suffocated rather than giftwrapped?
