ying

Haven't heard of it? It's the next dessert trend. Invented by this 6 year old who happens to be my cousin and who should be famous and adored all over the world one day, along with the rest of his talented siblings.

I'm never having kids cause they'll never be this cool.

other than running a fabric shop, here's what i've been doing

Had escargot for the first time in honor of Erica's b-day. Went to the Paris Bistro in SLC which was super delicious.

Attended a fake wedding b-day party for a friend's daughter, at which her father dressed up as Macho Man and stayed in character the entire time.

At the last minute JD got us tickets to the Postsecret event at USU. Lucky day, though it turned a bit too group therapy-ish at the end.

postsecret

Saw Glasvegas. Swooned the whole time.

Dyed Easter eggs with Rosie despite not having any kids around.

Continued to be obsessed with my monkeyniece who likes to play this game where she blinds me.

Carry on.

no dice

Threw a shower for my almost-sister-in-law Saturday. Playing with faux diamonds, glitter, and all things Tiffany blue is pretty fun.

diamonds are a girl's best friend
Here's what I did:
glittery name tags
glittery "diamonds are a girl's best friend" banner on Tiffany blue
faux diamonds in all sizes everywhere
gem and faux diamond rings for prizes
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes playing silently on the flat screen, unmuted for Marilyn's musical number
dessert bar (I made the diamond-cut baklava and red velvet cupcakes topped with edible diamonds)
fake Tiffany jewelry boxes filled with homemade caramels for party favors
Didn't have time for:
diamond playlist with copies on cd for everyone
wrapping the lingerie

two more weeks

My brother Matt and soon-to-be sister-in-law Randi had some early wedding photos taken last week. You can see some here and help them out with a comment there--if their post gets the most comments they win free prints.

the reason

I'm a bad blogger these weeks is because I've been spending my busy days here.

boxing kickboxing
Those are just some of the boxes that are filling up my mom's house. Boxes full of our fabric and books and patterns that will be moved to the store very soon. Boxes that will not be moved to my mom's new house this Saturday. Those boxes are in all the other rooms. We are crazy. Opening a store and moving into the house that was 5 years in the making, all in one week.
kaffes
That's just some of our Kaffe Fasset fabric. They are all in our web shop now. But I can't tell you where to find that web shop yet. Not till it's finished. Wait in suspense, you.

If I'm not unpacking fabric or packing the house, I am probably hanging out with my little monkey niece.
learning early
She has already shown a propensity toward Kaffe's "lovely fabarics." Man I am obsessed with her.

hey, peaches

Spent the weekend with the fam including my freaking adorable little niece. At age 2 she is already a perfectionistic Virgo like me. She lines up her teddy grahams on the high chair tray and meticulously puts her crayons in the box, over and over.

lip lips
And she likes her lipstick. And stepping on the dog's tail. If my brother wasn't so good with her, I'd steal her and raise her as my own.

Adventures in Utah County: Part I

Tomorrow I leave for NYC for almost a week and I probably won't be posting much while I'm gone. But I've still got to tell you about my Saturday adventure with Ams, so I'll push out a bunch of posts on that to tide you over.

There's a soft but constant buzz about everything that's going on in Utah County these days, so Amber and I took a day trip to check it all out. First stop, Highland Gardens.

highland gardens

Ams and I had been plant shopping recently, but wanted something more than what we had seen so far in SLC. Highland Gardens to the rescue! This nursery happens to belong to my Aunt Lynette and Uncle Ken and run by my adorable cousin Jessie, but I hadn't been there in years. All bias aside, I was so amazed. Some of the things I love about it:
  • humongous selection
  • incredibly knowledgeable and friendly staff
  • everything is organized and clearly labeled, including prices
  • the lovely and helpful website
Not to mention the gorgeous plants.
the spread

I'm obsessed with these fuschias. I got a miniature version for myself.
fuschias

I probably won't go anywhere else for plants now. If you can make it all the way to Draper for Ikea, you shouldn't let point of the mountain keep you away from HG.

super mega

Gave my lil sissy an impromptu haircut last night. There wasn't really a plan but once we decided we were done, it reminded me an awful lot of that chick in the video for "My Friend Dario." I think it turned out pretty rad.

ich liebe meinen bruder

Thursday, March 20, 2008

I am without my power adapter and the toolbar on my computer has said 0% battery for the last half hour. Lappy must really want me to continue telling you about my sentimental week. Right now I'm maybe more excited than I've ever been to see somebody. I've been having these dreams where I race to meet and embrace my little brother, just like in a movie. I haven't seen Andy in over two years, though I've spoken to him four times on the phone and exchanged weekly emails. He's been teaching and serving as an LDS missionary in Korea, and tomorrow I get to pick him up from the airport. I'm so excited to see how he's changed and to have the fam back together. There's something about each of my siblings. Rosie and I have gender proximity. The whole sisterly bond thing. Matt and I have the age proximity, and all that time we got to spend together as the two oldest. Andy and I must have genetic proximity. I think we look the most alike and have the most similar personalities. He already has plans for us to start recording music together. And I've carefully compiled a playlist of what he's missed in the last two years (missionaries don't listen to secular music) on a cute new red ipod shuffle for him, which I will not let him detatch from himself until he gives me a detailed report back. I'm sure there will be more to come on our musical adventures.

Hallelujah!

I finally got my laptop back! I actually had to stop myself from kissing it as I was leaving the Apple store. Now things can go back to normal.

Back when I dropped if off to be fixed there was this awesome guy with the thickest glasses ever next to me at the genius bar with his old school desktop. I loved the image of crazy genius old man sitting there with his old but space-agey computer under those florescent lights, so I had to surreptitiously snap his photo with my iphone.
Other things that happened while I was computerless:

I reunited with Alison, an old college roommate and the kind of friend who will always feel like family. I hadn't seen her in a couple years but now she lives just a few blocks away, and by a lucky turn of events I got to go to the blessing of her new baby.

I dug out my dad's old trunk of memorabilia from the LDS mission he served in Australia many years ago, for reasons I'll discuss in a later post, and dressed my sister in a kangaroo pelt.

Rosie as a roo

I raided my mom's fabric stash so I can make my first quilt which will be a gift for a friend's baby. Then I went to an actual fabric store and got more to make another quilt for another friend's baby. Looking at that first one, I may need to take out some of those yellows. These are all 30s reproduction fabrics, which I particularly like.

The thing that did not happen while I was computerless: a finished thesis proposal draft.

Let's catch up on the last few weeks. I...
watched BYU win by a fingertip in Vegas, then celebrated,

had the traditional Christmas candy gorge in Idaho,

won the first annual Make Dad Cry On Christmas contest (thanks, iPhoto),
made some discoveries when home in the OC:
While antiquing, found an ominous note on Raggedy's belly.

Then, spotted high up on the wall of a bank in Orange:

It says, "I pulled it off." Who knows? But with a little human tower we did, and Brynn kept the reward. Too bad she doesn't have her own blog or she could have told you all about it herself.

Then noticed this when driving by my old high school. Really?
And I got to hang out with Brooke which was a total treat.

Like the procrastinator I am, I have a 2007 musical recap post in the works and it's now the second week of 08. Well, soon enough.

Lohan served by trick-or-treater

So here's a funny thing I found out about over Thanksgiving weekend. A member of my family is a partner in a Southern California law firm who has a case with Dina Lohan, Lindsay Lohan's mother, named as a witness. They try and try to subpoena her but she's quite evasive. So finally, on Halloween, the firm's process server (the guy who delivers the papers) dresses up along with his little daughter and they go trick-or-treating to the Lohan residence in L.A. When Dina's at the door giving out candy to his daughter he asks, "Oh, are you Mrs. Lohan?" and shakes her hand. When she answers yes he gives her the papers and says "You've been served!" Ha! I wanted to know what they dressed up as, but my informant didn't know. Nor did he tell me what the case was all about. But still a good story.

{edit} I couldn't find it at the time of post, but here is a video of said law firm's other brush with fame. (click on photo)

Happy Birthday, Momma!

Wasn't she a cute baby? My mother is pretty rad. She is the most patient, fun, smart, stylish mom. I'm pretty lucky. Hopefully she'll have a lovely birthday of Christmas decorating and pumpkin pie.

Happy Thanksgiving!

During the holidays I especially miss my little brother Andy even though I'm incredibly proud of him for working hard as an LDS missionary in South Korea. Just a few more months till he comes home! I've been watching some of the videos he's sent. Here he is (on the left with the guitar) with his missionary companion at the time performing A-Ha's "Take On Me" at some sort of church function last December.

I arrived at my mom's house the other night to my sister's confession, "I've been reading blogs!" This is the sister who out of some sort of principle refused to read my blog all this time. Well if you can read one, you can have one.

Fairchild's Sleeping Army

A few days before that I caught my mom cuddling with a stack of her fabric. And a few days later I caught her singing to her new blog.

Hello, there

I'm back to boring accents and plenty of internets! Amy, Emily and I spent a grand week in the UK, first Glasgow for the wedding of dear friends, then London for a little fun. It's been a couple days home now and I think I'm almost unpacked and almost dejetlagged.

If wasn't for jetlag, though, I wouldn't have had so much fun Friday night. I couldn't sleep early that morning, so I got up and chanced to see some America's Most Smartest Model on tv. Somehow, so had Libbie and JD, and that night when I was deliriously sleepy we actually reenacted the contest where they had to name as many items as possible in a certain category while walking the runway. Everything is so funny when you're tired! We styled ourselves in blankets and challenged each other to catwalk while naming things in the categories of: crayola color names, things that shimmer, and varieties of eggs. I really must have no pride that I'm telling you about our juvenile, sober, fun. But when was the last time you really played like a kid with no worries? It's a pretty good feeling. But I don't endorse the show.

Another good thing about traveling, every time I get home there's a package from another country waiting at home for me. How does this happen? Last time it was the gift of a vintage ring from Mitch & Niall in London. This time it was cartoon socks and candy from my adorable brother Andy who is currently an LDS missionary in Korea. That's him with the robot that he gave no explanation of.

Anyway, Ima try to get back to semi-regular posting. Maybe more about the trip, maybe I'll not hate music enough to post some. (But really, it's not getting less overwhelming--did you see the ridiculous amount of supposed to be good that was released this week? I'm boycotting all new music.)

the chillens

Oddly this past week I spent a lot of time with young kids not at all having to do with work. While I could go days without even noticing a child, lately there's been the niece, friends' kidzes, and lil cousins all over. I even got to play with two of my lil cuz's superhero personas, Ood and Tood. Well, sometimes they are Ev and Tev. Or Little Guy and Big Guy, who's powers are getting littler and getting bigger, respectively. The best was when they honored me with a name too. They offered Cood, Toia, Quibbus, and Medium Guy, but I think we settled on Peb. I'm not yet sure what Peb's power is though.

Also my mom suggests there's a resemblance between Kewpie and Benjamin. Think?
